Glasgow - A 50 minute train journey from Edinburgh takes you to Glasgow's Queen Street train station. Purchase the Mackintosh Trail Ticket for £12.00 at Glasgow Tourist Information centres and visit The Mackintosh House, The Lighthouse, Glasgow School of Art, House for an Art Lover, The Hill House, The Mackintosh Church and Scotland Street School with unlimited travel on the SPT Subway and First bus services. We HIGHLY recommend having lunch at the Famous Willow Tea Room designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904. This is in Glasgow city centre.

Take a lovely train journey and escape the city to the seaside resort and harbour of North Berwick. Here you'll find the Scottish seabird centre, Tantallon Castle,  public golf courses and a volcanic hill which dominates the town.

The train journey takes approximately 30 minutes through lovely Scottish countryside from Edinburgh.

Children may enjoy the tidal pool too!
Stirling is an enjoyable day trip through the countryside from Edinburgh and only 45 minutes by train (the bus takes a lot longer). Sit on the right side to see Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Stirlings train station is central as is the Stirling castle which was built before the 12th century. Stirling also boasts a William Wallace monument, Robert the Bruce Memorial, old town Jail and plenty more sites! Join the open top bus tour which starts at the train station or hop on at any of its 14 stops. The #62 bus will also take you to the Wallace monument.  The Settle Inn pub, an Alehouse dating back to the 1600's has a good reputation. Train or bus will take you easily to Stirling and back to our Edinburgh holiday rental accommodations.

Edinburgh Lothian and First Bus Route Sites

The Scottish Mining Museum is a 5 Star visitor attraction set in the wonderfully restored Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange, just 9 miles south of Edinburgh.  Visitors to the museum can see, hear and feel all the different elements which made up this dangerous, and on occasion deadly, working environment!  Café, gift shop and free parking.  Open all year.  Lothian Regional Transport buses stop at the entrance - nos 29, 3 and 3a.

Rosslyn Chapel is a most amazing church dating back to the 14oo's. Extraordinary architecture and masonry carvings. http://www.rosslynchapel.org.uk/ By bus - Lothian bus 15A and First bus 62 operate regular services from Edinburgh City Centre to Roslin. The Chapel is then a 5 minute walk from the bus stop. Unfortunately interior photography is no longer allowed.

Linlithgow Palace July 2008
A 20 minute train journey from Edinburgh can take you to Linlithgow and Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots back in 1542. A magnificent building in a majestic lochside location. Lovely for picnics. Throughout July and August Wednesday evenings, the Palace is open to the public for courtyard Scottish Dancing. Dances such as the Gay Gordons, The Flying Scotsman, Boston Two-Step and Flowers of Edinburgh are popular and there is instruction if need be.

Live pipe bands provide the music and tea with shortbread is provided.

Rosslyn Chapel can be easily reached by the 15A Lothian bus.

Loch Ness is quite a distance away, if possible I'd recommend a 2 day trip. If you are travelling with a tour group then make sure they also stop at Urquhart Castle which is located on the banks of Loch Ness.

There is now a 5 star Loch Ness Visitor exhibition centre. You can book a fast pass at the exhibition website.
